Loriann,

Don't get discouraged eventually everything will even out. It just takes time and please be patient if your thyroid is spiraling down. Eventually it will level off. How long have you been on thyroid meds and what did the doctor give you as a diagnosis? Was it autoimmune hypothyroidism? Just remember that you are not alone and it doesn't have to be as bad as it might sometimes seem.

I just found this web page. It's New Year's Day. I feel like someone wrote this article just for me. It is me. It all makes sense now. I had no idea that my hypothyroidism was related to the other issues. My thyroid meds are still not working (or I guess my thyroid is spiraling down). My synthroid gets increased with every blood test and trip to the doctor. I guess I don't have the best of doctors, but I don't have the financial means to go elsewhere. Thank you so much for having this website. I think it's a sign that 2012 is going to be a better year for me !

Hi Romi,

Sorry to tell you that your allergies to sea food shouldn't have anything at all to do with hypothyroidism.

Unfortunately once your thyroid glands have been removed and/or you have radiation treatment you do become hypothyroid.and that can even worsen over time. If you are experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism then even your normal doctor should be testing your thyroid levels to figure out if they are off. If it turns out that they are normal then he/she should be testing and checking you for other things like a hidden infection someplace in your body that you aren't aware of or stress related issues, just to name a couple.

Elizabeth,

Can you get out to another doctor and when was your blood work last checked. You should have that done at least 2 times a year.

Elizabeth,

Thank you for your comment.

We all need to be extremely careful about what we choose for treatment. I just had my most recent appointment with my endocrinologist and had a very enlightening conversation with her about symptoms that I was experiencing that point toward my thyroid being off...She looked at my test results and said. It's not your thyroid, your thyroid levels are just about perfect...She was right! I had a bladder infection, along with (embarrassed to admit) poor eating habits that was causing my issues.

I will be writing a post hopefully this weekend regarding what I learned at that appointment. It was really quite enlightening.

Hi Marlene,

Thanks for sharing... I just saw my endocrinologist yesterday and she got on me about my lack of fiber and water in my diet... I admit I tend to get lazy about that stuff and I have lately. She always suggests everything in moderation and well balanced. She's right too.

Jennifer,

It sounds like you are hyperthryoid not hypo if i'm reading your numbers correctly. Don't panic just let your doctors treat you properly. If you aren't satisfied with the amount of information that your doctor is giving you on your condition then go to an endocrinologist or another doctor who is more forthcoming about your condition.

Below is the list of test results and what they indicate regarding hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroid would be the opposite.

Thyroid test results – Pituitary gland Issue:
Total t4 = below normal – less than 4.5 and TSH = below normal less than 0.5 – There could be an issue with your pituitary.
Thyroid test results – Hyperthyroidism Issue:
TSH = below normal less than 0.5 – You may have hyperthyroidism – an overactive thyroid condition
Thyroid test results – Hypothyroidism Issue:
TSH = above normal more than 5.5 – You may have hypothyroidism – an underactive thyroid condition
Total t4 = below normal – less than 4.5 and TSH = above normal more than 5.5 – This indicates hypothyroidism – an underactive thyroid condition.
Free t4 = below normal – less than 0.7 – This indicates hypothyroidism – an underactive thyroid condition
Total t3 = below normal – less than 80 – This indicates hypothyroidism – an underactive thyroid condition
Free t3 = below normal – less than 2.3 – This indicates hypothyroidism – an underactive thyroid condition

Let us know how you make out.

Does anybody use the real thing like Thyroid or Armour made from desiccated thyroid from pigs? This medication is far more like our own thyroid (if it works properly) and gives less or no side effects like levotyroxine and Liothyronin together gives.

I am 59 years old and have been hypothyroid - maybe for at least fifteen yerar or more, but it was discovered seven years ago. For those last years I have been on levotyroxin the latter two also in combination with Liothyronin, and still only got more problems because of side effects like:

ankle problems (stumbling), stiffness in neck (left side only), joint pains, hair loss, brittle nails, thinning eye brows, acne on my scalp, sluggish, myxedema, little body hair, no sweating.

The doctor would typically say all of these symptoms is from getting older, but for me that doesn’t make sense. Now I’ve been only 12 weeks on Thyroid Erfa (Canada) and many side effects have already vanished, so how does that explain “problems getting older”?

I recommend reading Stop the Thyroid Madness by Janine Bowthorpe and Hypothyroidism Type 2, The Epidemic by dr. Mark Starr.
