Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy – It Is a Possibility

There are so many questions out there surrounding Hypothyroidism and pregnancy. While I can’t tell you everything that you need to know on the subject, I can share the Hypothyroidism and pregnancy success stories of myself and another family member of mine who has Hypothyroidism. Maybe our experiences can help others understand some of the dynamics of having hypothyroidism or Hashimoto disease and being able to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies without complications.

Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy – My Success Story

hypothyroidism and pregnancyMy experience is as such; going back some years ago I had gotten pregnant and within twelve weeks was diagnosed as having a miscarriage. It was actually more of a false pregnancy because the fertilized egg only took long enough to provide my body with increased pregnancy hormone levels, giving the appearance of a pregnancy that turned out to be false.

A few months later I started to exhibit symptoms of Hypothyroidism. I made an appointment with the Doctor and sure enough I was suffering from an Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I found out that if not treated properly ahead of time that hypothyroidism is a disease that definitely could cause issues in a woman suffering with hypothyroidism during pregnancy.

Well as my story goes over time, I was put on thyroid stimulating medication and in actually less than a year my medication levels were regulated. I tried once again to get pregnant and was quite successful. During my pregnancy the only thing that was done different from my first pregnancy was that at each of my visits my thyroid hormone levels were tested and if it was needed my medication levels were adjusted to keep my thyroid hormone levels normal. I had a healthy pregnancy and a very healthy beautiful baby girl without any complications. Doctors should always consistently track thyroid hormone levels in women with hypothyroidism during pregnancy.

Now in the case of my family member who also has an underactive thyroid, things weren’t quite as simple. There was an issue with her pituitary gland which is common in cases were hypothyroidism is concerned. Issues with the pituitary gland will affect the levels of prolactin that your body produces which in return will affect fertility, as was in the case of my family member. Once these things were discovered through a pituitary scan and blood tests and all of her various hormone levels were regulated and with the aid of fertility medication she has had 3 successful pregnancies and has a beautiful family.

The main point is that you can in fact have hypothyroidism and still have children. If you are a woman who has an underactive thyroid, what you have to do is to consult with your doctors, especially one that specializes in thyroid diseases to figure out what it is that’s causing your infertility. Once that’s determined it’s just a matter of keeping everything regulated through gestation and the entire development process of your little baby. It is possible with the aid of your doctor to have your own Hypothyroidism and pregnancy success story.

Best wishes and remember work closely with your doctor. Healthy children are definitely possible in cases of Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy.

i was just diagnosed as having hypothyroidism by my specialist this month. he asked me to take 50mcg of synthroid. is it ok to be pregnant this month, too, or hold it for a little later?

I realize I’m a little late here, but better late than never. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism DURING pregnancy, and my synthroid dosage was 50mcg the entire pregnancy. It was perfectly safe for the baby. My baby is now 10 mos old and healthy as a horse! However, my thyroid has gone berzerk since having my son… and I”m now up to 112mcg of synthroid… it’s very frustrating

    rmn,

My thyroid issue went off the wall and became extremely evident just after a false pregnancy during hormonal changes. That’s when I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. My meds have been regulated for quite a few years now and it took about a year for my thyroid levels to be regulated.

I have had hypothyriod problem for years and i have a 7 & 8 yr old that when i was pregnant i just had to monitor my T4 and a couple times adjust my synthriod. I hadn’t been on my meds in a while because i had no health insurance but i got pregnant 8/2010 but had a misscarriage at 12 weeks. not sure if it was throid related. i do know that having such a problem can make it hard for you to get pregnant but is possible just talk to your doctor

    Llavona,

I had my miscarriage at just about 12 weeks as well. I hadn’t been diagnosed with hypo at that point but was soon after and the doctors were pretty sure that the miscarriage was related to my condition. It was weird because there wasn’t an embryo to be found just the development of an amniotic sack. The fertilization process took place only long enough to start to hormonal process which created the sack and then the fertilized egg just dissolved soon after. So there never really was a baby just a false pregnancy. It was an interesting experience to say the least.

Now the other thing that I want to say to you is that if you still don’t have health insurance then you really should go to a clinic or someplace where you can get a free medical check up so that you can get your meds. This is extremely important or you could end up facing serious health issues that will affect your heart and mind. Find a way to get back on your meds no matter what.
